When you think of swimwear, you probably think of polyester, nylon and other synthetic fabrics. They've become so familiar that we rarely question whether a bikini could be made from something different.
But what if you're looking for something softer, more breathable and comfortable against your skin?
That's where cotton swimwear comes in.
Why we created a cotton bikini
When I started Nuvola, I wanted to create pieces that had a genuine purpose. I've always been interested in the materials we wear, particularly those sitting directly against our skin.
It got me thinking: why is almost all swimwear made from synthetic fabrics? And what if you wanted something different, especially for the times when you're not actually swimming?
That question became the starting point for our cotton bikini. Something simple, flattering and versatile, made with a considered choice of fabric.
Can you actually swim in a cotton bikini?
Yes, you can swim in a cotton bikini, although cotton behaves differently from traditional synthetic swimwear.
Unlike polyester or nylon, cotton absorbs more water and takes longer to dry. This makes conventional performance swimwear better suited to intensive swimming and water sports.
But for relaxed dips in the sea, cooling off in a pool or spending most of your time enjoying the sunshine, cotton swimwear can be a lovely alternative.
Our Cotton Bikini Set is made from 95% cotton and 5% Lycra, combining the softness of cotton with a little stretch for comfort.
The benefits of breathable cotton swimwear
One of cotton's most appealing qualities is its natural breathability.
Cotton allows air to pass through the fabric and feels soft against the skin, making it a popular choice for clothing worn close to the body.
For people who find certain synthetic materials uncomfortable, a cotton-rich bikini may offer a more comfortable alternative.
Heat, friction, perspiration and prolonged moisture can all contribute to skin irritation, particularly for those with sensitive skin.
Although cotton cannot prevent irritation entirely, choosing soft, breathable fabrics and changing out of damp clothing can help support everyday skin comfort.
A bikini for more than just swimming
One of the reasons we love cotton swimwear is its versatility.
For sunbathing: Whether you're relaxing in the garden, reading beside a pool or enjoying a beach holiday, a breathable cotton bikini offers a soft, comfortable option for slower days in the sunshine.
For saunas: Cotton can be an appealing alternative to synthetic swimwear for sauna visits, particularly if you prefer natural fibres against your skin. Always check your sauna's clothing requirements and change out of damp swimwear afterwards.
For swimming: Our cotton bikini is designed for relaxed swimming and light dips, rather than intensive water sports. Bear in mind that cotton takes longer to dry than conventional swimwear.
For lounging: Sometimes you simply want something comfortable to wear on a warm day. A cotton-rich bikini can be just as suited to relaxing at home as it is to a holiday.
Is cotton better than polyester for swimwear?
Neither material is necessarily better for everyone — it depends on how you intend to wear it.
Polyester and nylon offer advantages when it comes to quick drying, stretch and performance in the water.
Cotton offers something different: softness, breathability and a natural-fibre alternative to predominantly synthetic swimwear.
If you're looking for a bikini for sunbathing, sauna visits, lounging and occasional swimming, a cotton-rich option may be exactly what you're after.
We believe it's about having more choice.
